Benintendi Back in Action? White Sox Hopeful for Thursday Return | Spring Training Update (2026)

Get ready for some exciting baseball news! The return of Andrew Benintendi is imminent, and it's a story that has the potential to spark some interesting debates among fans.

Andrew Benintendi, the White Sox left fielder, has been on the sidelines since late February due to general soreness in his right side. But fear not, as he's set to make his comeback this week!

In a recent interview with the Chicago Sun-Times, Benintendi expressed his eagerness to return to the lineup for Thursday's night game against the Cleveland Guardians. He assured fans that he's feeling good and ready to go, with no setbacks expected.

Sox manager Will Venable confirmed the plan, stating, "He'll be ready Thursday. We're being cautious, but he's been swinging and running today. If it wasn't March 2, he'd probably be playing already."

The team has a busy week ahead, with a home game against the Padres on Tuesday and an off-day in the Arizona sun on Wednesday. Benintendi's return will be a welcome boost, especially considering his limited game time in February, where he managed three hits in seven at-bats, including two doubles.

But here's where it gets controversial... Benintendi's 2025 season was a challenging one. He missed most of spring training after being hit by a pitch, resulting in a non-displaced fracture in his right hand. Upon his return, he battled a left abductor strain, and later in September, tendinitis in his left Achilles tendon kept him out for the remainder of the season.

In a season plagued by injuries, Benintendi only managed to play in 116 games, batting .240 with 20 homers and 63 RBIs. At 31 years old and entering his 11th big-league season, Benintendi acknowledges that he's at a crossroads in his career.

"We're not getting any younger, and sometimes it feels like one injury after another," he said.

When asked about the Sox's ongoing rebuild, Benintendi offered an insightful perspective: "We're a couple of years into it now, and it feels less like a rebuild. Guys are solidifying their roles. We've brought in a lot of new talent, and this year will be crucial for many of us returning."

And this is the part most people miss... Benintendi's return isn't the only story brewing in the Sox camp. Davis Martin, Monday's starter for the White Sox, is vying for the prestigious Opening Day start on March 6 against the Brewers in Milwaukee. With just 25 days until Opening Day, the competition is heating up.

Martin shared his thoughts on leadership and evolution in the game: "Everybody is embracing a leadership role. It's organic; no one is forcing it. We all have our areas of expertise, and I still learn by asking questions. This game never stops evolving, and if I find myself in a leadership position, I'll just be myself."

As for the Opening Day start, Davis added, "I have no idea if it's wide open. We're all competing as if it is."

So, what do you think? Are you excited for Benintendi's return? And who do you think will claim the Opening Day start? Let's discuss in the comments and share our predictions for the upcoming season!
