A 71-year-old bushwalker, David Elliot, is missing in the rugged Blue Mountains of New South Wales, Australia. Elliot, an experienced hiker, was last seen at 5:30 am on February 3, 2026, at Dunphys Camp Ground in Megalong Valley. He intended to embark on a 30-kilometer bushwalk, but failed to return as planned.
The search and rescue operation, involving multiple agencies, began at 7:30 pm on the same day. Local police, assisted by Police Rescue, the New South Wales State Emergency Service (SES), and the New South Wales Rural Fire Service (RFS), have been combing the area since 9:30 am the next day. The search is challenging due to the harsh weather conditions and the difficult terrain.
Elliot is described as a Caucasian man, approximately 180 cm tall, with a medium build and a bald head. He was last seen wearing beige pants, a black or beige shirt, a beige-colored floppy hat, and glasses. Interestingly, despite being an experienced bushwalker, Elliot was not adequately dressed for the overnight weather.
He was reported to have a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB), but it has not been activated. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make an online report. The authorities and Elliot's family are deeply concerned about his welfare, given the harsh weather and the rugged nature of the Blue Mountains.
This incident highlights the importance of proper preparation and equipment when venturing into remote and challenging environments. It also emphasizes the need for timely communication and the use of emergency devices in such situations.
