A harrowing incident unfolded at a Moama skate park when a dog, allegedly involved in an attack on a toddler, was shot by police. This event has raised serious questions about animal control and public safety, and the aftermath has led to significant legal repercussions for the dog's owner.

The incident began on a Friday afternoon when, according to New South Wales Police, a large dog managed to escape from a parked utility vehicle and attacked a three-year-old boy at the Moama skate park. Fortunately, both officers from the Murray River Police District and quick-thinking members of the public were able to intervene and separate the child from the animal. However, the dog reportedly continued to exhibit aggressive behavior, prompting a male senior constable to discharge his firearm, resulting in an injury to the animal.
Following the shooting, police allege that the 35-year-old owner of the dog retrieved the injured animal and left the scene in his vehicle. The young victim was transported to Echuca Hospital for medical attention and has since been discharged, thankfully recovering from the ordeal.
And this is the part most people miss: The situation escalated significantly when, approximately one and a half hours after the initial incident, police intercepted the same man on the same street. A search of his car revealed not only the injured dog but also a significant quantity of cannabis and over $92,000 in cash. Further checks uncovered that his South Australian driver's licence had expired a staggering 12 years prior.
As a result, the man has been hit with nine charges. These include serious offenses such as possessing and supplying a prohibited drug, and recklessly dealing with the proceeds of crime. He was taken into custody and remanded, with his next court appearance scheduled for Wednesday at Albury Local Court. His bail was refused when he first appeared in court on Saturday.
Adding another layer to the unfolding events, about an hour after the man's arrest, a 42-year-old woman was apprehended in Moama. She was found in possession of the dog that had been shot. This dog has now been seized by council rangers. The woman has been issued a court notice for drug possession and is expected to appear in court in April.
A spokesperson for NSW Police stated that while inquiries into the incident are being made, it did not meet the threshold for a critical incident investigation. The investigation into the full circumstances surrounding both the dog attack and the subsequent drug and driving offenses is ongoing.
