SpaceX's bold new direction: A lunar base before Mars?
In a surprising turn of events, SpaceX, the renowned aerospace company, has announced a shift in its immediate goals. Instead of prioritizing Mars settlement, as previously envisioned by its founder, Elon Musk, SpaceX is now aiming for a "self-growing city on the Moon." Musk believes that establishing a lunar base is a more feasible and faster endeavor compared to the ambitious Mars mission.
But here's where it gets controversial... Musk claims that SpaceX could achieve this lunar city within a decade, a timeline that many in the industry might find optimistic, given his track record of ambitious promises. In fact, Musk had previously stated that a base on Mars would be ready for settlers as early as 2024, a goal that has yet to materialize.
In a recent post, Musk clarified that while Mars colonization will commence in the next five to six years, it will be a parallel effort, with the Moon taking center stage initially. He even suggested that a manned Mars flight could happen sooner than expected.
This shift in focus is a significant departure from Musk's earlier statements. In 2022, he declared that SpaceX would be "straight to Mars," dismissing the Moon as a mere distraction. This stance was in response to industry analysts who highlighted the potential advantages of lunar regolith, a material rich in oxygen, which could significantly reduce the need for shipping liquid oxygen between planets.
And this is the part most people miss... NASA's Artemis program, which SpaceX is a part of, aims to return humans to the Moon by 2028. The upcoming Artemis II mission, scheduled for March this year, will see astronauts orbit the Moon before returning to Earth. This mission could provide valuable insights and pave the way for a permanent lunar base.
